Yanunijarra Prospectus 2022

We're pleased to share with you our 2022 Prospectus. Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation and its team of Ngurrara Rangers are currently accepting expressions of interest for research partnerships. If you’re an academic or researcher interested in establishing projects on our Ngurrara native title area, then we would love to hear from you. Our skilled and highly motivated rangers are also available for a range of fee for service work, including fencing, weeding, burning, and cultural heritage surveys. Finally, we are running cultural awareness packages for people living and working in Ngurrara communities or on Ngurrara land. Fire Management on the Canning Stock Route

Eighteen people. Five cars. Three trailers. And multiple boggings … The Ngurrara Rangers are cooling their heels after a successful week out on the Canning Stock Route to Kuduarra (Well 46) and surrounds. We undertook some chopper assisted fire walks, as well as some aerial burning runs. We were also lucky to visit an important cultural site / rock hole. Thank you to Tom Montgomery, for the beautiful photos, and to the Kimberley Land Council, Indigenous Desert Alliance, Environs Kimberley and Frontier Helicopters for your support on this trip.

Burning, water monitoring and cultural clearance with Mangala TOs

The Ngurarra Rangers recently completed an important trip with Mangala Traditional Owners. We visited Wuriwilki jila and Pikarangu jila where there was lots of water around, and also plenty of evidence of camels—the water was fouled at both sites. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to find and visit Kumi jila. The aim of our trip was to undertake cultural clearances of country ahead of some fantastic, early-season cool burns. You can see the green leaves in the burning photo. A big thank you to all the Traditional Owners and Rangers involved in making this trip such a success.

Giant heritage grant win

Yanunijarra has just won an Australian Heritage Grant for 2021-2022!! This crucial funding will allow us to undertake a 10 Year Review of our Ngurrarawarnti Wulyu Martarnupurru Healthy Country Plan. As Traditional Owners, we care deeply for our freshwater places on country, and visits to our jila and jumu form a significant part of daily life and our work program. This work is guided by our Healthy Country Plan, which was first developed in 2012. By reviewing the plan, we’ll be able to ensure we can properly look after our water, manage new threats to biodiversity, and maintain the outstanding values which make our country so significant for Traditional Owners and the broader nation. We look forward to updating you on the process.

Chantelle Murray: 'I loved every moment of this job.'

Yanunijarra is so sad to be farewelling an incredible woman from our team. Chantelle Murray has been a powerhouse for the Ngurrara Rangers over the last 12 years! She started as an administrator for the Warlu Jilajaa Jumu IPA rangers, moved up to become a Ngurrara Ranger, and then moved higher to become the Ngurrara Women's Ranger Coordinator.

She says, 'I loved every moment of this job. I enjoyed the company of an amazing team when out on country. The best part of this job was travelling out on country, working with different Traditional Owners and also learning new things every day.’

It’s been a huge 2021! We’ve been spending plenty of time on country, caring for country, and making the best of a tricky work situation given the uncertainty around COVID-19. Here are some beautiful photos from our work this year.

Environmental Resilience in the Great Sandy Desert

We’ve been pleased to work with the Indigenous Desert Alliance and the 10 Deserts Project Team as part of a program that aims to build the capacity of Indigenous groups to look after country for economic, social, cultural and environmental outcomes. The project integrates contemporary natural resource management best-practice with traditional cultural and ecological knowledge to help us build environmental resilience in the Great Sandy Desert. Ngurrara Women Rangers take to the skies

Ngurrara Women Rangers took part in an Incendiary Machine Operator training course recently at Nifty mine in the Pilbara. This training was facilitated by our good neighbours the Martu rangers and the 10 Desert Project. First time in a chopper for some and we look forward to seeing the rangers in the skies above Ngurrara country soon….go ladies!!!

Ngurrara and Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara native title holder's meeting

This meeting is called by Peter Murray, Chief Executive Officer, Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC ICN 7478. Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC is convening a meeting to consult with Ngurrara and Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara common law native title holders to discuss the KLC’s Transfer of Material Policy in relation to site material held by the Kimberly Land Council (KLC). The meeting will also discuss any policies and procedures adopted by YAC for the future purpose of managing and using site information.

Time: 4:30pm – 6:00pm following the Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC Directors meeting

Who should attend: All persons who hold native title in the Ngurrara and Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara native title determination areas.

Financial capacity-building and strategic planning for YAC's directors

YAC's directors and steering committee members have been busy putting their heads together to develop a strategic plan for the organisation. They've also been participating in a financial capacity-building workshop. All this happened in FX last week. Big shout out and thank you to Frank Weisenberger for delivering a great workshop.

Northern Australia Indigenous Ranger Forum

Last year, the northern Australia Indigenous Ranger Forum was held at Gurrbalgun (Pender Bay) on Bardi country ... this year, it was hosted by the Carpentaria Land Council. Frankie and Cyril, two of our Ngurrara rangers, travelled for a total of six days to attend this important event. 

Women rangers storm Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair fashion show

Our women rangers have been in Darwin over the weekend for the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair fashion show. They were busy with the Marnin Studio selling scarves, shirts, bags and dresses - the dresses were made with native bush dyes and block printing which they did out at Djugerari community. Each dress is more than just a dress ... it contains the passion of being out on country!! Wonderful job to all the ladies involved.
